What You Should Know About Treating Head Congestion at Home

At certain times of the year it seems like everyone is suffering from head congestion. Head congestion is the result of your sinuses and nasal passage lining becoming swollen due to an inflammation of the blood vessels. Although the majority of the time this is caused by a viral illness, it can sometimes be the result of sinus infections and allergies. Dealing with the congestion is never a pleasant task, but there are several easy things you can do to ease your discomfort and shorten the amount of time you’ll spend with a stuffed up head.

Things to Avoid

There are several things you should avoid while congested. The most important thing is to stay away from allergens, perfumes, and smoke. They can easily irritate your nose and subsequently increase congestion.

If you smoke, avoid doing so if possible during this time. If you cannot, then make sure that you do not smoke inside your home. If other people in your home smoke, have them stop. There are lingering smoke particles that may be floating around your house still, so consider letting your house air out. If you have a new air filter lying around that you’ve been procrastinating changing out, use your congestion as motivation to complete this task.

You should also avoid lying down. This can cause pain, increase sinus pressure, and worsen your congestion in general. If you cannot sleep in a recliner, then make sure that your head is propped up on plenty of pillows while you sleep.

Fluids, Fluids, Fluids

While it may seem logical to limit fluid intake, thereby “drying up” your congestion, this is not a wise course of action. It’s very important that you remain well-hydrated. This will help you thin out your head congestion. If you have a fever, then large amounts of fluids like juices and teas are even more important.

Clearing It Out

There are several things you can do to help clear out the gunk in your nasal passages. Taking an over-the-counter antihistamine is a great way to help dry up the mucus and put a stop to its production. Make sure to follow the safety labels since the side effects are rather strong.

Using a decongestant medicine is also helpful. It can reduce the inflammation of your mucus membranes which will help put an end to your head congestion.


Saline nose drops are great for easing the pain of your nasal passages, and they also help flush out any stubborn mucus. These drops can be bought over-the-counter at any pharmacy.

Making your own steam room is also a good way to clear your head. Shut your bathroom door and stuff a towel under the door. Turn your shower on and make sure the temperature is turned to hot. Once the room gets steamy remain there for 15 minutes. Make sure you bring a book to read and have an ample supply of tissues.

Night Time Help

When you sleep it’s impossible to monitor any clogs in your nose. Buying a humidifier and letting it run when you sleep will help you breathe easier while you sleep. Be sure to clean it daily however, as mold can grow inside and make your congestion worse.

In addition to the humidifier, you can use adhesive strips designed to help with snoring as well. Placing them on your nose before you go to bed will help open your airways which allow you to breathe much easier while congested. These can be bought at any pharmacy and most grocery stores.
